The CIE is pleased to announce that Prof. Roland Fleming, Kurt Koffka Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Giessen, Germany, will deliver a keynote lecture at the 31st Quadrennial Session of the CIE, taking place in Nanjing, China.
His lecture, “Material Perception”, will explore how the visual system enables us to perceive and interpret the properties of materials. Material perception is a fundamental aspect of visual experience, shaping how we recognise and understand the appearance, structure and physical qualities of objects and surfaces in our environment. This keynote is closely connected to the work of CIE Division 1: Vision and Colour, with relevance also to CIE Division 8: Image Technology, reflecting themes related to visual perception, material appearance and the interpretation of visual information.
Prof. Fleming is Executive Director of the Center of Mind, Brain and Behavior and Head of the Excellence Cluster “The Adaptive Mind”. He studied at the University of Oxford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), followed by postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics. His research has been recognised with several prestigious distinctions, including the Vision Sciences Society Young Investigator Award and two European Research Council (ERC) Grants, a Consolidator Grant and an Advanced Grant. In 2022, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
