Currency: CNY-RMB. Major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and large shopping malls, but mobile payments (Alipay, WeChat Pay) are more prevalent. ATMs are common in Nanjing and throughout China. You can obtain RMB through the following ways:
- Bank Branches: You can exchange foreign currency for RMB at the counters of major banks (e.g., Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, etc.) in downtown Nanjing. Passport is required. Business hours are typically Monday to Friday, 9:00-17:00.
- ATM Withdrawals: ATMs displaying logos like UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, etc., allow direct cash withdrawal in RMB, converted at the real-time exchange rate. Your card-issuing bank may charge a handling fee.
- Foreign Currency Exchange Counters: These are located at Nanjing Lukou International Airport, major commercial districts, and some hotels. The airport exchange counters operate from 7:00 to 23:00, allowing you to exchange foreign currency cash for RMB upon arrival with your passport. Business hours for counters in commercial districts and hotels vary; please confirm in advance based on your schedule.
- Mobile Payment: It is ubiquitous in China, covering malls, small shops, taxis, buses, and even markets. Using Alipay or WeChat Pay, you simply show or scan a QR code to complete the transaction, no cash needed. It is highly recommended to download and register for Alipay or WeChat in advance. International credit cards can be linked to some payment accounts; it is advisable to set this up before departure.
Language: Chinese. Key conference services and signage will be provided in English.
Electricity: 220 Volts, 50 Hz. Socket types are mainly Type A (2 flat pins) and Type I (three flat pins). It is recommended to bring a universal travel adapter.
