For the 31st Quadrennial Session of the CIE (CIE 2027), the workshop programme is currently under development by the International Scientific Programme Committee (ISPC).

Building on the CIE’s scientifc approach, workshops are shaped to address a diverse range of topics across the CIE Divisions, often crossing disciplinary boundaries. These interactive sessions are designed to inspire thought, encourage meaningful discussion, and foster engagement on forward-looking topics aligned with the CIE’s mission, often providing input into the future direction of CIE publications.

Participants will be invited to actively contribute to the exchange and help shape the dialogue through these collaborative sessions. Further details will be shared in due course.

WS3: Daylight requirements and metrics: Bridging harmonization and design

This workshop is intended to help shape how the CIE can take a leading role in the harmonization of daylight metrics and requirements for urban and building design.

It aims to attract interest from both within and beyond the CIE community by addressing topics that slightly extend the current CIE scope, such as view-out, while remaining closely connected to CIE’s core expertise in light, lighting, and daylighting.

WS4: Recommendations for sports lighting

Sports lighting is a complex application because it has to provide a suitable luminous environment for athletes, referees and spectators, and in some cases provide the conditions required by TV and film systems. The illumination of large areas to  high levels must be done whilst controlling for glare in multiple viewing directions, controlling obtrusive light and light pollution, with consideration to the needs of different sports that might take place at the same location. The time has come to revisit the current lighting recommendations. The objectives of this workshop are to discuss open questions about sports lighting, collect ideas for improvements, outline directions for future research, support groundworks in CIE/TC4-57, and prepare new work items for standardization.

WS5: Assessment of photobiological safety and challenges with new products

The rapid proliferation of advanced light sources and applications—from therapeutic wearables to novel UV emitters like 222 nm systems—demands a critical re-evaluation of existing safety paradigms. While CIE S 009/IEC 62471 provides a robust framework for acute photobiological hazards, its applicability to emerging products and usage scenarios remains an open question.

This workshop moves beyond established protocols to explore potential gaps in current standardization. We will initiate broad discussion on whether the field should address long-term cumulative effects (e.g., skin aging, photocarcinogenesis) alongside traditional short-term exposure limits. Furthermore, we aim to challenge conventional testing methodologies concerning new application modalities, such as close-proximity devices and high-intensity localized treatments.

Rather than presenting definitive answers, this session seeks to catalyze expert dialogue, capture diverse perspectives, and identify unforeseen challenges. The goal is to map out critical research and standardization needs to steer the future work of CIE in photobiology safety.

WS6: Material appearance and metrology of surface nonuniformity or texture 

In 2003, Pointer [1] noted that the material appearance could be measured through four optical properties: color, gloss, translucency and surface texture. He went to add that these “four measures are not necessarily independent“ and that “surface texture is probably a function of all three of the other measures”.

This workshop will focus on these notions of material appearance metrology. It will consider the texture measurement (definition, measurement principles, methods and procedures) and the definition of scales of texture references. It will also consider measurements of gloss and translucency as measures of the appearance. In this context, HDR imaging is particularly important for improving the image quality and consequently the measurements derived from the captured surface. Furthermore, the measurement and management of glare are expected in order to solve the problems induced by non-Lambertian surface and lightning conditions.
